Google AI Mode Gets More Links: What PH Website Owners Should Do
On October 15, 2026, Google announced that AI Mode and AI Overviews in Search will show more links to websites, placed higher in the answers. It is also testing a section at the top of some answers that points to the one or two official sites for a task. For Philippine businesses, schools and LGUs, this is a small but real chance to win back clicks from AI answers, if your site is the clear, trustworthy source.
Key takeaways
- Google is putting more inline links inside AI Mode and AI Overviews answers, and placing them higher.
- A new section that highlights official websites for a task is in testing, not fully launched.
- News carousels that favour readers' Preferred Sources are expanding to more countries and languages, which Google did not name.
- No new code is needed. Clear, accurate, crawlable pages are what give you a shot at these links.
What Happened
AI Overviews are the AI summaries at the top of some Google results, and AI Mode is the chat-style search tab. Site owners have long complained that both answer questions without sending visitors to the source websites. On October 15, 2026, Hema Budaraju, Google's VP of Product Management, posted "More ways to connect with the web from Search" on Google's blog to address this.
Google listed five changes: more inline links (links on words inside the answer) shown higher; a test of a top section for the one or two official sites for a task; thumbnails on related-article links; wider news carousels that highlight Preferred Sources; and a test linking creator names on video results to their Search profiles.
Why It Matters
When people get answers from an AI summary, the links inside it become the front door to your website. More links, placed higher, means a better chance that a customer clicks through to your menu, rates or enrollment page.
The official-sites test matters most for local readers. Searches like "how to renew a business permit" have one true answer on one official page. If that page is clear and current, it is the kind of source this section is built to show. A scanned PDF or an old Facebook post gives Google less to work with.
Be realistic, though. Search Engine Land's Barry Schwartz doubted searchers will click these links much, and noted that Search Console still has no separate click data for these features.
| Change | Status | What it means for your site |
|---|---|---|
| More inline links, placed higher | Live, increasing | Pages that answer one question clearly are easier to link to. |
| Official-sites section | Testing | Official pages (LGU, school, brand) need to be clear and current. |
| Related links with thumbnails | Announced, no date | A good featured image on each article can help. |
| News carousels, more countries | Rolling out | Publishers can ask loyal readers to add them as a Preferred Source. |
| Creator names link to Search profiles | Testing | Search profiles are limited to eligible creators in a few countries. |
For Philippine businesses
Google did not say which countries get each change, so I would not assume everything is live here yet. The direction is clear, though: AI answers should point to the official source. For a cooperative, a Bukidnon resort, a school or an LGU office, that means your own website, with your address, hours, prices and requirements written as text, not only in posters or on social media. Fixing that is cheap and helps both regular search and AI answers.
What to Do Now
- Make one clear page per task. Give "How to order" or "Enrollment requirements" its own page, with the answer near the top.
- Write key facts as text. Put your address, phone, hours and prices in real text on the page, not only inside a poster image or a PDF.
- Add structured data that matches the page. LocalBusiness or Organization markup helps Google understand who you are. Only mark up what visitors can actually see.
- Check Search Console every month. Verify your site, fix indexing errors and watch clicks over time.
- Keep your site fast and secure. Use HTTPS, compress images and test on a phone with mobile data.
My take
I welcome more links, but I would not plan a business around a feature that is partly in testing. What I like is that the advice has not changed: be the clearest, most accurate source for what you do. If your website already does that, you are ready. If it does not, this is a good week to fix it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What did Google change in AI Mode and AI Overviews?
On October 15, 2026, Google announced five changes: more inline links placed higher in AI answers, a test of an official-sites section at the top of some answers, thumbnails on related-article links, wider news carousels that highlight Preferred Sources, and a test that links creator names on video results to their Search profiles.
Are all of these changes live in the Philippines?
Not confirmed. Google said the news carousels are expanding to more locations and languages but did not name them, and the official-sites section and creator profile links are still tests. I will update this post when Google shares country details.
Do I need to change my website for this?
There is no new tag or setting to add. What helps is the usual work done well: clear pages that answer one task each, accurate business details, structured data that matches the page, and a site Google can crawl.
Will Search Console show clicks from these new links?
Partly. Search Console counts AI Overview clicks inside normal web search data, and Search Engine Journal notes that all links in one AI Overview share a single position, so a link moving higher will not show as a better position.
Can you help me get my website ready for AI search?
Yes. I review and fix small business, school and LGU websites so their pages, structured data and Search Console setup are clear to both people and Google. Contact me here.
