Node.js Security Releases on Oct 21: What PH Developers Should Do
The Node.js project announced on October 14, 2026 that it will ship security releases for the 26.x, 24.x and 22.x lines on or shortly after Wednesday, October 21. The worst issue in each line is rated HIGH. If you run a Node.js app, API, chatbot or build server, now is the week to find out which version you are on and set aside time to patch.
Key takeaways
- Node.js 26.x, 24.x and 22.x get security fixes on or shortly after October 21, 2026.
- The highest severity issue in each of those lines is rated HIGH. Details are not public yet.
- Node.js 20 reached end-of-life on April 30, 2026 and will not get these fixes.
- Node.js 26 becomes the new Active LTS on October 28, 2026.
What Happened
Node.js is the JavaScript runtime behind a lot of the web: REST APIs, Messenger and Viber bots, admin dashboards, Next.js sites and the build tools many of us use every day. On October 14, the Node.js project posted a security pre-announcement. That is an early warning that patches are coming, so teams can plan before the details go public.
The notice says new versions of the 26.x, 24.x and 22.x release lines will be available on or shortly after Wednesday, October 21, 2026, and that the highest severity issue fixed in each line is HIGH. It does not say how many issues there are or what they affect. It also repeats an important rule: end-of-life versions are always affected when a security release happens, and they do not get fixed.
Why It Matters
The timing lines up with the yearly LTS (long-term support) change. According to the official release schedule, Node.js 24 moves from Active LTS to Maintenance LTS on October 20, and Node.js 26 becomes Active LTS on October 28. Node.js 20 already reached end-of-life on April 30, 2026. If a server is still on Node.js 20 or older, it will stay exposed to whatever these HIGH issues turn out to be.
Here is where each line stands as of today:
| Release line | Status (Oct 17, 2026) | End-of-life |
|---|---|---|
| Node.js 20 | End-of-life, no fixes | Apr 30, 2026 |
| Node.js 22 | Maintenance LTS, gets the Oct 21 patch | Apr 30, 2027 |
| Node.js 24 | Active LTS, Maintenance from Oct 20 | Apr 30, 2028 |
| Node.js 26 | Current, Active LTS from Oct 28 | Apr 30, 2029 |
For Philippine businesses
Many local systems quietly depend on Node.js: online ordering pages, booking forms, school portals, cooperative member apps and chatbots built by freelancers years ago. Often nobody in the business knows which version is running. If your app collects names, phone numbers or payment details, keeping its runtime patched is part of protecting that data under the Data Privacy Act (RA 10173). Ask your developer or hosting provider this week which Node.js version you are on.
What to Do Now
- Check your versions. Run
node -von every server, and check the Node.js version set in your hosting panel, Docker base images and CI pipelines. - Make a short inventory. List each app, where it runs, its Node.js version and who can deploy it. Start with apps that face the internet.
- Book a patch window for October 21 to 23. Once the new 26.x, 24.x or 22.x versions appear on the Node.js blog, update through your usual tool (nvm, your package manager, or a new Docker image tag) and restart the app.
- Test before and after. Run your test suite or at least click through login, forms and payments on a staging copy, then watch your logs after going live.
- Plan your way off Node.js 20. Move unsupported apps to Node.js 22 or 24 now, and try Node.js 26 on staging for the next big upgrade.
- Get future warnings early. Subscribe to the official nodejs-sec mailing list so the next pre-announcement reaches your inbox.
My take
I like that Node.js warns us a week ahead, because it turns a scramble into a planned task. The real risk I see in client projects is not the patch itself but the forgotten server still on Node.js 18 or 20 that nobody has touched since launch. Use this week to find those, and you will be ready for October 21 and for the Node.js 26 LTS switch a week later.
Frequently Asked Questions
When exactly are the Node.js security releases coming out?
The Node.js project says new 26.x, 24.x and 22.x releases will be available on or shortly after Wednesday, October 21, 2026. No time of day was given, so check the Node.js blog on October 21 and 22, Philippine time.
What are the vulnerabilities being fixed?
The details are not public yet. The project only says that the highest severity issue fixed in each of the three release lines is rated HIGH. Expect the full details when the releases are published.
I still run Node.js 20. Will I get a fix?
No. Node.js 20 reached end-of-life on April 30, 2026, and the Node.js project notes that end-of-life versions are always affected when a security release happens. Plan a move to Node.js 22, 24 or 26.
Should I jump straight to Node.js 26?
For new projects, Node.js 26 is a good choice: it becomes Active LTS on October 28, 2026 and is scheduled for support until April 30, 2029. For existing apps, patch your current supported line first, then test Node.js 24 or 26 on a staging copy before switching.
Can you help me update and secure my Node.js apps?
Yes. I can check which Node.js versions your servers and apps use, apply the October 21 patches, and plan a tested upgrade away from end-of-life versions. Contact me here.
